N - Newtons Laws

The opportunity to use more eggs has presented itself!! OH JOY!!

We worked on Newton's Laws - well, we did some tricks experiments involving inertia, motion and gravity.

Trick #1 Experiment #1

You'll need:

  • Eggs NOT BOILED
  • Paper plate
  • Toilet paper tube
  • Glass of water
  • Willing participant
Here's Logan performing our trick:

He was really proud of himself, and he SHOULD be! It was pretty cool!

Trick #2 Experiment #2

You'll Need:

  • Bottle
  • a dollar
  • A stack of quarters
Here's the amazing Logan performing our trick:

That was cool, right?!

If you want to do these tricks with your kiddos, here's a YouTube video explaining Newton's first three laws and how they were demonstrated during these tricks experiments.

J - Jumping Beans!!

This one is ridiculously simple and cool. I know you'll have everything you need.

You'll Need

  • foil
  • marble
  • a jar
 See, I told you!

Cut a small piece of foil.
Put the marble on one side.

Fold over both ends.
Place it in the jar. Shake it up...this will alert the kids. They come running and want to know whats happening....
"I'm training my jumping beans!"
Oh, boy they went crazy...I took them out and showed them how they move out of control.

Liam thought they were real, he was very disappointed to find out they weren't really alive.

Logan had to know what was causing it, he's a thinker, he wants to know about everything!

I is for I Suck!

I was all kinds of CRAZY amped about doing all sorts of ICE things for the letter I.

Guess what....it is difficult to film water freezing!  So, not very well planned on my part!

Make ice in ONE SECOND!!

I know, hard to beleive right?! that's because its really total BS. It actually takes more like 3 hours....BUT, super cool and really impressed the boys...wanna try?

Put a few bottles of water in the freezer for 2.5 - 3 hours.
Pull them out VERY CAREFULLY! (seriously, if you tap the bottle, even just a little that sucker freezes and then your starting over!)

Be sure the kids are there - SOMEONE tap the bottle and watch it freeze!!!

NEXT ICE TRICK -Elsa's FREEZE power!

If you enjoy having your kids freaked out, like me, it can be a pretty awesome power to have....just sayin'.

You'll need a glass of SUPER cold but not quite frozen water.
Stick the tip of your finger in crushed ice so that some will stick to your finger (the kiddos don't need to know about that part)
touch the top of the water and watch the freeze

You can check out a really awesome video and explanation on YouTube.

NOW - ICE FISHING!!

You'll Need:
a bucket
Ice
Water
a makeshift fishing pole - get creative - the kids can even make their own! But use kite string for catching the "fish"

Set the fishermen out!

G - Geodes - Lets make Geodes!!

I have always thought geodes are so cool! The way they reflect the light, all the color variations, Heck, even the word, GEODE sounds cool!

So, lets get to it!

There are several ways to make geodes at home.  We went with the simplest - yeah - I'm a slacker!

You'll Need:

1 cup Epsom salt
1 cup HOT tap water
egg shells
food coloring
**you do NOT need the action figure that you see here...**

That's it! Oh, yeah and time!

After a HUGE scrambled egg breakfast, Liam and I mixed up everything and pored it into the shells. We also tried using plastic Easter eggs, because, well they are all over my house!

FOUR DAYS LATER..

Now, they didn't come out as fabulous as I was expecting, based on the results I've seen on other sites.
Maybe I did something wrong  I probably did something wrong.

Maybe using the watercolors instead of food coloring made a difference? I have NO clue! But they were pretty, and the boys liked them. So, my experiment was a success!

Next up, same basic recipe only in a shallow dish. This time instead of WAITING FOUR LONG DAYS, this recipe calls to put them in the refrigerator for several hours.

It was a TOTAL bust...again...Maybe I did something wrong  I probably did something wrong.  Absolutely NOTHING happened...Very disappointing...

I found these recipes on education.com. They have several more, which I may test out too..

How to Make A Freaky Foldable Egg and BLOW your Friends Minds!!!

You might be wondering, Why is she so obsessed with egg projects?
I'm glad you asked! LOL With chickens and ducks around, we have a TON of eggs - more than we can POSSIBLY consume. So, I have to get creative!

On to the experiment!

This is a really easy one!

You'll need:

  • 2 eggs
  • a container
  • a needle or skewer to poke holes in the egg
  • vinegar

Poke a hole in the top and bottom of the egg - CAREFULLY!

Now, pucker up and BLOW!! LOL SO, gross! I wanted to take a picture of this step, but Liam wouldn't do it. He made me and he LAUGHED. I think he also screamed, "GROSS" and even gagged while I was doing it. That was super helpful since it made me gag, which made him laugh MORE!

Delightfully Dirty Dirt

D....what a delectably delightful digit! I immediately thought of Dirt, because, well, I have boys. Problem is, my boys aren't keen on getting dirty. Yeah, weird, I know. My guys are kinda control freaks, I'm not sure how that came to be, fact is, it be.

So, I needed to get them to enjoy "dirt" in a  controlled environment.  I found a super easy and fun way to do just that!

Catapulting Craziness!!

Our third day on our mission through the alphabet. My boys are starting to get into this now. Today they asked what we would be making. That got me excited!

I searched my most favorite place on the world wide web...Pinterest!!! There are a ton of different types of catapults. I knew there would be, I was just a bit overwhelmed!

I narrowed the results down to three.

  • Lincoln Log Catapult
  • Clothes Pin Catapult
  • Popsicle Stick Catapult

Boys Blowing Blue Bubbles!

As a kid, the Dr. Seuss B book was my FAVORITE!!
I still know it...I can still see the pictures from the book...
Big brown bear, blue bull, beautiful baboon, blowing bubbles, biking backwards, bump black bugs banana boxes and billy bunnies breadbaskets.
..Okay, I'm stuck.
But, you get the point, right?

So, my boys blowing bubbles made me happy. It also made them happy. They love doing anything bubble related, who doesn't, right?

A for ACID nope just joking... A for AIR PRESSURE

Today is the first day of the 26 day challenge, blogging A to Z.
I decided my theme would incorporate my boys.
They love sciencey (is that a word?) things, so we are going to attempt a different experiment each day.
So, right off the bat, today was a bust! I thought it would be super exciting to do A for ACID and light a low voltage bulb using lemons. Only it didn't work.
In case you would like to try and then tell me how super successful you were and how easy it was (seriously, don't do that) here's what you need:
